Bin Enquiry FormThis Hutt City Council event celebrates cycling, and is also supported by the Greater Wellington Regional Council, local retailers and cycling groups.
“The number of people biking into Lower Hutt’s CBD is on the rise with 40% more people riding bikes compared to three years ago,” says Hutt City Council road safety coordinator Jan Simmons.
With an upsurge in people wanting to cycle, Hutt City Council is building new cycleways for Lower Hutt.
Schools are also getting behind cycling with nine Lower Hutt schools building bike tracks as part of their ‘Bikes in Schools’ projects. Last year around 1,890 school students took part in bike skills training delivered by Greater Wellington Regional Council’s ‘Pedal Ready’ programme.
“Lack of confidence at riding in traffic can prevent people from cycling regularly, but initiatives like the ‘Go by Bike Day’ and the ‘Pedal Ready’ programme which offers workshops for adult riders to upskill are really making a difference,” says Jan Simmons.
“So pump up your tyres on Tuesday night, then jump on your bike on Wednesday morning, and ride down to the Dowse for free coffee and good food. There will be music, free bike checks, spot prizes, e-bikes and e-bike conversions on display, and much more”.
