About the Archives

The Hutt City Council Archives contain information and records on the history of the Council and its activities across Lower Hutt. The collection includes documents, images, plans, and select objects.

Searching the Archives

Many of the items in the Archives have been digitised and you can view them by searching the Archives online.

To get help with your search

1. Email informationmanagementteam@huttcity.govt.nz
2. Tell us what you're trying to find along with your contact details
3. We'll acknowledge your enquiry within a day of receiving it and give you an indication of when you can expect to get the information you’ve asked for.

Charges may apply if your enquiry involves more than 1 hour of searching the Archives on your behalf or reproduction of material. We will discuss these charges with you if needed. 

Sometimes information has a restriction on it and it can't be released due to the Privacy Act 1993 or other legislation.

What is in the Archives?

Property information

To find property information held by Council use our Building Information Search.

Some property and building information is held separate from the building information and is available by searching the Archives online. This includes: 

• Rate books
• Valuation records
• Maps and plans​
• Building records​
• Aerial photographs
• Town planning information.

We also have many other ways you can find property information including through drainage plans and the Property Enquiry system. 

Information on Council activities

The Archives hold information and records created by Council for Council activities. This includes the records of many Lower Hutt based boards and authorities including:

• Minute books
• Correspondence records
• Images from Council activities.
