Before you light a fire, go to their Check It's Alright website or call 0800 658 628 to find out what the fire status is and if you need a permit.

If an Authorised Officer believes that the bylaw is being breached, they may take reasonable steps to reduce the nuisance or risk. Costs may be recovered from the owner of the property or the person(s) who caused the nuisance.
You might also need permission to light a fire from the property or land owner if the burn site is on Council reserve, Department of Conservation (DOC) or Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) land.

Fire and Emergency NZ's Principal Rural Fire Officer for Wellington manages and administers the Lower Hutt Rural Fire District. They are responsible for reviewing and updating the Rural Fire Plan every two years.
The fire plan is a statement of fire control policy, chain of command and procedures by Fire and Emergency New Zealand. Legislation requires all FENZ delegates to have an operational fire plan.
