Oil

Dispose of oil responsibly. Do not pour it down a wastewater or stormwater drain.

Left-over motor oil and petrol containers can be taken to the Silverstream landfill transfer station for appropriate management. There's a drop off point for these containers as you enter the transfer station.

Paints and solvents

Dispose of paint and solvents responsibly. Do not pour them down a stormwater drain.

Take your left-over paint to one of the two following locations. They will accept their own products for free with a small charge for others.

Medication, sharps and needles

Please take these items to your local pharmacy for safe management and disposal. Sharps and needles include EpiPen auto injectors.

Garden and household chemicals

These include pesticides, herbicides, household cleaning agents, and pool chemicals. Left-over garden and household chemicals can be taken to the Silverstream landfill transfer station for appropriate management. There's a drop off point for these containers as you enter the transfer station.

Gas bottles and cylinders

LPG bottles can be dangerous if not handled correctly and degassed. 

You can take your gas bottles to the following places for safe disposal:

• The Diveshop - 227 Waiwhetu Road, Lower Hutt (small fee applies).
• Silverstream landfill transfer station (normal landfill charges apply). There's a drop off point for gas bottles as you enter the transfer station.

Batteries

Single use batteries (eg. button and alkaline batteries) can be put into your normal household waste.

Other batteries, such as lead acid batteries for cars or lithium-ion batteries, can be taken to the Silverstream landfill transfer station. There's a dedicated drop off point for batteries as you enter the transfer station.

Fluorescent light bulbs

Check with your local retailers as some take back fluorescent light bulbs.

If you're a business and want to make sure your bulbs are recycled, please contact Interwaste. They will deliver a pre-paid box for you to dispose of old bulbs. Collection of the full boxes is included in the price of the pre-paid box.
