Tsunami evacuation zone maps

Blue Lines are road markings that show the maximum reach of a large tsunami. They also show where you need to get past in such an event.

The Blue Lines are at the edge of the yellow tsunami evacuation zone. Read more about tsunami blue lines in Lower Hutt. 

The maps below show the tsunami evacuation zones for the Lower Hutt region.

What do the maps mean?

In the Wellington region we are at risk of:

• local tsunami, from earthquakes or landslides in the Cook Strait. The maps show in yellow where a tsunami such as this may reach. This is known as the yellow evacuation zone.
• large distance-source tsunami, from earthquakes around the Pacific Ocean. The maps shows in orange where a tsunami such as this may reach. This is known as the orange evacuation zone.
• small distance-source tsunami, from earthquakes around the Pacific Ocean. The maps show in red where a tsunami such as this may reach. This is known as the red evacuation zone.

The only warning you will get for a tsunami caused by a local earthquake is the earthquake itself. For distance-source tsunami there may be time for official warnings and evacuations.
