Bin Enquiry FormWharves are a feature of the region. They were originally built for commerce and transport but, with the exception of Days Bay, are now mostly used for recreation purposes.
Currently there are four wharves:
Our wharves were subject to a review in the 2017/2018 Annual Plan consultation, as the cost of maintaining all our wharves was more than the budget the city had.
We commissioned a conditions report to gain information about the current state of the wharves. We then held a full consultation about options to refurbish, remove, partially remove or replace the wharves between March and April 2017. We received many submissions in the consultation round. A recommendation report was then submitted to Council.
In June 2017 Council decided to fully refurbish Days Bay and Rona Bay Wharves and to fully refurbish and remove 50m from the 110m long outer head of Petone Wharf. This wharf will remain 340m long. Point Howard Wharf will be removed.
Rona Bay wharf reopened in December 2018 following refurbishment that took into account the heritage listing of the wharf and included ripping up the old deck surface and replacement of all timber beams and braces, the repair of piles, the laying of a new concrete deck and replacement of approach fencing and stairs to the beach.
Work on Days Bay wharf commenced in 2019 after the busy summer period. A geological study of the piles at Point Howard wharf established that the risk to the aquifer from removing the wharf is low, and further work is being done to mitigate any risk involved in the removal of the wharf. Refurbishment of Petone wharf is scheduled for 2032.
