Our community indicated that environmental sustainability should be a top priority. Many of the environmental choices we make help build our city's economic and social resilience. So it makes sense for us to think about environmental sustainability when we plan our major projects or look for ways to serve ratepayers more efficiently.
The Long Term Plan sets out Lower Hutt's goals for the next 10 years and beyond. It sets out specific environmental projects and goals. It considers the environment as part of economic, social, environmental and cultural wellbeing across all business areas.
The District Plan has information about managing the natural and built resources and how land can be used or developed. It's amended by plan changes often involving environmental measures.
Climate change is presenting significant challenges for communities here and around the world. We have work underway to better understand and respond to the particular challenges for our city.

The Greater Wellington Regional Council and other organisations like NIWA, GNS Science and Wellington Water will also have a key role in supporting our work providing specialist expertise in the development of plans for our community.
We’re already using this information to ensure new infrastructure and roading builds are resilient.
We’re also working towards making our business carbon neutral by 2050, as well as looking at ways to reduce emissions right across the city. The council has produced an Interim Carbon Reduction and Climate Resilience Plan 2021-2031, Mahere Hukihuki Whakaiti Waro me te Manawaroa ā-Āhuarangi mō Te Kaunihera o Te Awa Kairangi. It describes what actions the council will take over the next 12 months and beyond; as it works towards becoming a carbon neutral organisation by 2050.
