Do you need to get your dog microchipped?
Any dog born before 1 July 2006 does not have to be microchipped unless it is classified as a dangerous or menacing dog.
Exemption is also available for dogs used for herding and driving stock (PDF 119 kb).
Dogs born since, or first registered in New Zealand after 1 July 2006 must be microchipped.
Microchipping is a simple procedure. A small chip which is the size of a grain of rice is inserted into your dog’s neck. Animal Services offer microchipping for $40.
