Bin Enquiry FormHutt City Council runs a number of road safety projects and activities involving primary and secondary schools. We work with our community and with partner agencies such as the New Zealand Police and Greater Wellington Regional Council.
We are making our streets as safe as possible for children’s trips to and from school by:
We encourage active travel (walking, biking, scooters and skateboards) for trips to and from school because this reduces traffic chaos around the school entrances. It also has benefits to children’s health and wellbeing, and is good for the environment.
We can support your school to set up walking school buses and keep them going, and to run ‘walk to school’ promotion days.
We focus on active travel during Movin’ March and encourage all our primary and intermediate schools to join this region-wide initiative.
Bike skills training is available to Lower Hutt schools - free of charge. Training is delivered by Greater Wellington Regional Council’s Pedal Ready programme.
A number of Lower Hutt schools have also completed ‘Bikes in Schools’ projects and several more are in the pipeline. For more information, check out the Bikes in Schools website.
NZTA also have a bike skills education site, called BikeReady.
