Bin Enquiry FormIt's one of New Zealand’s premier cycle trails, mainly off-road, taking in unique river, mountain and coastal scenery, mixed in with local heritage, culture and attractions.
The trail includes the Hutt River Valley, the Remutaka Range historic rail trail, South Wairarapa rural roads and the south-east Wild Coast Trail to Orongorongo. It can be ridden in either direction, but is commonly started in Petone and takes 2–3 days to complete.
It’s estimated that the region sees $4 million per year in revenue from around 100,000 visitors to the various parts of the trail.
Visitor spend and stays directly attributed to the trail and businesses are supplying new tourism infrastructure to support cyclists on and around the trail.
A network of cycle trails not only provide a healthy and enjoyable way for locals and visitors to see our region, but also generates economic, social and environmental benefits for our communities.
We’re working with:
Since opening in 2013 we and our trail partners, landowners and businesses have invested in many improvements along the trail with the help of co-funding from the government. This includes trail widening at The Esplanade Petone, trail grading on the Wild Coast Trail, resurfacing and trail connections – plus most recently a new bridge at Siberia Gully just south of the Kaitoke summit.
The trail comes to life through local businesses who operate guided tours, bike hire, accommodation and hospitality. It has resulted in a number of new businesses in Lower Hutt and across the region.
We are collaborating with our trail partners to develop a long term experience development plan for the Remutaka Cycle Trail. This will detail collective projects to enhance the trail experience for users and realise the potential of our trail for our community and region – including further trail and business development, marketing and sustainable funding. The trail’s long term vision is to be a loop ride right around the Remutaka Range via Eastbourne.
A proposed Heartland Ride will also provide a new on-road cycle touring route through Wainuiomata. The 28km trail will start at the Orongorongo River car park at the end of Coast Road, go through Wainuiomata, over the Te Hikoi Arawera / Wainuiomata Hill Shared Pathway and connect to the Hutt River Trail.
Remutaka Cycle Trail is also part of the Wellington Regional Trails framework to make Wellington’s trails world-class and wildly famous and, and as a result, improve the lifestyle of Wellingtonians through increased tourism and economic growth.
