Wainuiomata Hill Shared Path

Te Hikoi Ararewa is a key project in providing a safe and integrated network for commuting and recreational purposes under the current strategy, Walk and Cycle the Hutt 2014 – 2019.

The key features of the shared path are:

• A 4m wide off road sealed path for pedestrians and cyclists
• New roadside barriers to provide safe separation between the shared path and the traffic lanes
• Upgraded LED street lighting

Te Hikoi Ararewa will form part of a wider strategic network with future linkages to the Beltway Cycleway and the CBD planned.

How the community benefits

Hutt City has a great natural environment and an abundance of opportunities for walking and cycling.

A transport system that requires people to be active is hugely beneficial to our city, as well as to the health and wellbeing of our community. Benefits include thriving business areas, reduced congestion and vehicle operating costs, greater safety, resilient infrastructure and a better environment.

Te Hikoi Ararewa provides:

• A safe environment for pedestrians and cyclists on a high speed road  
• Safety improvements for road users including new LED lighting and roadside barriers
• Attractive facilities for new users  
• Improved connectivity between Lower Hutt and Wainuiomata  
• Increased active choices
• Improved access to existing mountain bike trails and walkways.

The project, in stages

Pukeatua Bridge

Pukeatua bridge was opened in 2015. The bridge connects walking and cycling tracks that run along Lower Hutt's eastern hills, stopping people from crossing the road in 80kmh traffic.

Stage 1

Construction on stage one began in January 2018 and was completed in December 2018.

Stage 2

Work on stage two began in July 2018 and took eleven months, with completion and opening of stage two in June 2019.
