Cycleways and shared paths

We're working on multiple projects to further develop shared walking and cycling routes around the Hutt.

We want to build a cycleway between Seaview and Taita. We are starting with building our first section between Waterloo and the Hutt River.

The project is a 4.4 kilometre walking and cycling path that will run along Marine Drive in two sections, between Ngau Matau | Point Howard and the northern end of Oruamatoro | Days Bay, and the southern end of Days Bay to Eastbourne. In the future, it will also link to other paths and regional routes such as the Remutaka Cycle Trail, and a future network of walking and cycle paths around Te Whanganui-a-Tara | Wellington Harbour.

The Manor Park Shared Path will complete a key section of the Hutt River Trail and create an important link to the Remutaka Cycle Trail.

The 115km regional trail starts and finishes in Lower Hutt and is one of 22 Great Rides in Ngā Haerenga - The New Zealand Cycle Trail.

Te Ara Tupua is the project to create a walking and cycling link between Wellington and Lower Hutt.

Wainuiomata has developed a Heartland Ride connecting the Wainuiomata Coast to the Hutt River as part of the Ngā Haerenga New Zealand Cycle Trail network.

Te Hikoi Ararewa (The Wainuiomata Hill Shared Path) was officially opened in June 2019.
