Bin Enquiry FormLower Hutt offers some of the most extensive dog walking areas in the region. Dog owners can take their pick of places where they are able to walk their dog either on leash or off leash.
For some time however Avalon Park has been a prohibited area for dogs with one exception - an area at the northern end where people are able to walk their dogs on lead.
With the transformation of Avalon Park into a park of local and regional significance, Council is taking the opportunity to check with people to see if the restrictions on exercising dogs in the park should change.
This is because there are people who want to take advantage of the new layout for Avalon Park and walk their dogs on leash on the perimeter walkway. Others would like to be able to walk their dog on leash throughout the park.
Council has a responsibility to make sure that it carefully considers these requests and balances these with its other responsibility of providing safe areas where children can play freely without coming into contact with menacing dogs.
Before making a resolution the Council must take into account Hutt City Council Dog Control Bylaw 2015 Clause 7A.1-3.
Exercising dogs off leash anywhere in the park is not an option that is being considered.
